Message from our President:

It saddens me to inform the membership that after the last newsletter of the year our wonderful Editor, Kathleen Voldish, will no longer be available to do our newsletter.  Kathleen told me she would help the new editor.  Kim Angelastro is going to take over, Thank You, Kim.

There were NJ members at the national convention of AMT held in Providence, Rhode Island.  Pam, Jennifer, Mary Lee, Beverly and Kim had a fine time, and attended very interesting seminars all week. The Welcome Reception was a good time.  I won the basket from Michigan, Kim won the basket from Missouri and Beverly won the basket from Arizona.

We received Honor Roll State Award for the second year.  The Society also won the Leona Lyons Carter Award for the most improved State Society. Richard Huysie, the Board of Directors, and I would like to give the Membership the credit for receiving these awards.

We all had a wonderful time in Providence.  It was restaurant week so we were able to eat at fine restaurants for some of our meals. I was so happy not to be the only New Jersey person there.  I had people to eat with and we attended some of the same seminars. The members that came found out that it is not easy to get to all the meetings.  You are up early and going to bed late.

The National Office has introduced its new Logo. You will see a copy on the National web site or at the fall meeting of NJSS of AMT October 25 & 26.  I want to have a nice turn out for the October meeting.  We will see you there!!!

Sincerely your president,

Pam Sharp, RMA

Electronic publications are moving forward, and states were given the “green light” to publish their newsletters/journals on the state websites if they so desire, in addition to hard copies.  The Publications Committee worked on some of the issues dealing with Electronic Publications, and there will be more news on this topic as the details are worked out.

AMT has a new logo, and will have a new look to the AMT website in the near future.  The website is being redesigned to be more “user-friendly” and modern.  In addition, AMT will be sending out surveys to a small group of its members asking for feedback on several issues.  If you receive this survey, please be sure to complete it – AMT is YOUR organization, and wants to better serve its members!

Your new National Officers for 2009 elected at the National Meeting are:

bullet

President – Paul Brown, PhD

bullet

Vice President – Roxann Clifton, MT

bullet

Secretary – Nancy Barrow, MT

National Medical Assistant’s Week is October 20-24, 2008, and the theme is, “Medical Assistants – Taking the Pulse of Our Nation”.  Please plan to promote this event that recognizes medical assistants’ vital role, contributions, and efforts in health care and to raise awareness of the profession.

Message from the Outgoing Editor

After 3 years of filling the position of editor of Phoenix Rising I will be turning over the position to Kim Angelastro.

I have been long involved with the AMT on a State and national level and feel it is time to start slowing down and head toward retirement.  I will still be a speaker in the NJ, Florida and National AMT in the coming years.

It has been a great pleasure and honor to work with the NJ AMT state officers.  I know how hard they all work to make our state society and great one.

Respectfully,

Kathleen Voldish, CLC(AMT)

Message from the New Editor

Hello everyone, I am Kim Angelastro, AHI, RPT, RMA, CMHT.  As a member of the AMT for 8 years and of the NJ AMT for the past year, I am excited to be a part of this award winning and ever growing State Society as your new Phoenix Rising Editor.

Suggestions, ideas, pictures, and other information from all of our AMT members of all disciplines would be greatly appreciated.  Did you celebrate an anniversary with AMT?  Did you just pass your certification exam?  We want to hear about it and be a part of your big moment.

Thanks to Kathleen for all help with my transition.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Angelastro, AHI, RPT, RMA

New Jersey MRSA Law

New Jersey signed emergency legislation which became effective on September 1, 2007 that requires general hospitals (licensed by the state) to implement an infection prevention program to eradicate Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) in their ICU’s or other critical care area’s if the hospital does not have an ICU.  Under this law, hospitals will eventually have to report positive tests to the state department of health and senior services.  The program will be expanded to other areas of the hospital in a timely manor.

Strategies that hospitals must adopt include:

bullet

Screening patients upon admission

bullet

Isolating MRSA positive patients

bullet

Exercise precautions for MRSA positive patients

bullet

Perform cultures on patients prior to discharge or transfer

bullet

Flag MRSA positive patients upon re-admission to the hospital

bullet

Put in place a written infection prevention and control policy

bullet

Implement a worker education program about MRSA transmission

While the new law has made many issues very clear there are still areas that need to be better addressed.  More information will be published as the program gets underway.

Guideline for Multi-dose Vials

This past winter, several cases of needle and syringe misuse made headlines. Patients made complaints to the Board of Health and OSHA.  Offices were inspected and found to be in violation of numerous infection control laws.  Lawsuits are currently pending due to these allegations.

The improper use of needles, syringes and of multi - dose medication vials can result in transmission of blood borne pathogens (e.g. hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV).   Each facility should review their policy for using multi- dose medication vials and train each employee that administers medications on the proper safety for drawing up and administering medications.

Proper Techniques for Safety (taken from OSHA and CDC documents):

bullet

Observe universal/standard precautions.

bullet

Practice aseptic techniques when administering injectables.

bullet

Extreme caution shall be used when handling needles and syringes.

bullet

Needle shall not be bent, sheared, replaced in the sheath or removed from the syringe following use.

bullet

Needles with safety devices will be used when available.

bullet

Safety devices will be activated immediately following use.

bullet

Needle and syringe will be promptly placed in sharps container.

bullet

The reuse of syringes or needles on multiple patients is not permissible.

Additional Safety Precautions:

bullet

Use affixed needles that can not be removed from the syringe

bullet

Use auto-destruct syringes that can only be used once

bullet

Use syringes with a safety plunger that breaks off after a single use

bullet

Gloves are not mandatory when administering medications (non-live).  However, they are recommended.

Additional Comments:

bullet

Needles and syringes that are pre-packaged are sterile and intended only for single use.

bullet

ALL hypodermic needles, as well as lumens of syringes used to administer parenteral substances should be sterile.

bullet

Visual inspection alone cannot guarantee absence of blood contamination in a needle or syringe.

bullet

Needles and syringes manufactured for single use should not be reprocessed.

bullet

Keep sharps container close to the area where needle and syringe is used.

bullet

Do not fill sharps container beyond 2/3 full.

bullet

Teach the staff sharps safety as part of required OSHA Blood borne and 2000 Needle stick Safety and Prevention Act training.

Multi-dose Vial Safety:

bullet

When possible use single dose medication vials.

bullet

After first use, date and label a multi-use vial.  This label should contain the following information: date first used, if reconstituted - the type of diluents used, volume added and concentration, nurse or health care professional who opened, storage (e.g. refrigerate).

bullet

Wash hands before handling vial or wear gloves.

bullet

Cleanse the access diaphragm of multi-dose vials with 70% alcohol before inserting any device into the vial.  Allow to dry (30 seconds).

bullet

Mix medication well by gently rocking - do not shake.

bullet

Store according to manufacturers recommendation.

bullet

Use only sterile needles.

bullet

Never aspirate vaccine from a multi-dose vial with a previously used needle or syringe.

bullet

Never leave a needle in the septum of the vial.

bullet

Discard multi-use vials if there is any chance that its sterility is compromised.

bullet

A needle or syringe that has been used to inoculate a patient is considered contaminated and should not be used to aspirate medication or vaccine from multi-dose vials if any of the contents of the vial will subsequently be administered to another patient.

bullet

Dispose of any live vaccine vials in a sharps container.
